A pleasant surprise this week as Scuba Schools International (SSI) has recognized the New Heaven Dive School for “Outstanding Achievement in Active Environmental Protection.” The award recognizes our commitment to the marine environment through the active conservation programs being carried out daily by the Reef Conservation Program at the dive school and participation in the SSI Mission Deep Blue program. The award was presented to our team on September 30th, by the SSI Regional Manager, Brain Knight. New Heaven was the only dive school on Koh Tao to receive this award.
Our team works hard on the island, spending each and every day, alongside a gang of enthusiastic conservation students and interns, monitoring reefs, maintaining coral nurseries and artificial reefs, installing mooring buoys, raining sea turtles, farming giant clams, and much more. We do this independently, without financial support from any outside organizations. For us, conservation is not about doing something good once in a while, it is a way of diving and a way of life. To be recognized by SSI in this way helps boost our moral, and helps us to remember that the work we are doing is not going unnoticed.
A special big thanks must also be given to all of the wonderful students and interns who come to support us every year. Without this influx of dedicated and passionate individuals we would not be able to continue our vital work here on this island. To all of those divers who want to reduce their negative impact, and give something positive back to the ocean we, we thank you, and hope that the momentum continues to grow.
