Koh Tao Festival 2012

Festival Bike Ride TeamOne of the highlights for the locals on Koh Tao is the Annual Koh Tao Festival. This years festival was on the 28th and 29th of April a two-day event put together by the Save Koh Tao Group, for both tourists a well as locals who come from the surrounding islands and the mainland to enjoy this amazing celebration of life.

For this years festival we had a change of location, for the first time the education/environmental section of the festival was held at the Save Koh Tao new office. As the booths and other building can be more permanent here, the usual team, constructed some great areas where we had the open ceremony and bicycle parade come in the morning and the turtles and giant clams where also here for the people to see and learn about.

Most people are waiting for the turtle release, which is amazing to see, every year we have the opportunity to release many baby sea turtles, this year some of the baby turtles were too small and weak to be released and are now being looked after at our dive school Turtle headstarting program.

Other environmental activities are planned during the day, land and underwater clean ups take place and by the time the sun sets the environmental and education booths close down and we head off to the stage area.  This year like every other we were entertained by the various show, Sunshine divers, Bans and Big Blue dive shops were the entertainers this year.

Neo TurtleOn both nights we had some of the best Thai music artist coming to play, I though Mahajamreon was the best band this year, fantastic !!

Late till the early morning the DJ’S continued with the music and dancing, now we all have to wait till next year for the next Koh Tao Festival.

Not only are there many greats acts to watch but also most of the island’s restaurants and store owner open up a little food stall at the festival area so you can sample the best of Thai cooking while you enjoy the shows.

The Festival always puts on a variety of show from Local dances and songs to live music, dancing and DJ’s. The Island’s elders hit the stage as well as the local school children. Competitions and prizes take place, shows and performances go out from some of the islands dives school, as well as some of the best music artist in the country.

The festival usually takes place around March or April, dates for the next festival will be announced on this website when we know. For now enjoy some of these pictures, but next time try to make it here to experience it in real time.

As a tourist always do your best and spend your money to support local efforts to protect and preserve the area you visit.
